'If' by Rudyard Howeling (AKA Tim Howe)
If you can down your Snakebite when all about you,
Are downing theirs and turning to you;
If you can trust yourself when the Old Boys doubt you,
But stand, sing and give new Chicago verses too;
If you can chin and not be tired of chinning,
Dominate the 'Front with songs and chants,
Sing KCL CL whenever you're winning, And Initiate like a man even without shirt or pants. If you can lash - and not make lash your master;
If you can still pull - but not make pulling your aim;
If you can survive every Berrylands flooding disaster
And still thrash the Godless in every game;
If you can bear to hear 'Next' spoken;
Remember but not repeat your 20-22 rule,
Watch the 7s chain you gave everything to broken, And instead win at Fives, and keep your cool; If you can be stretchered off and still get the rounds in,
And never lose the will to fight,
Stay with your brothers and not go flangeing;
To invade and pillage on Viking night;
If you can can conquer a Phaal, and not care about the morning,
Hit Walkabout Wednesdays come rain or shine,
Sink your pint when coined with zero warning, And still stand and calmly accept your fines; If you can scream GYRO and keep your virtue,
Sing every song till your voice is gone;
If neither the scum nor bouncers can hurt you;
And you drink like a champion even in your Ones;
If you can sink a four-pinter in sub two-minutes,
And sing Zulu Warrior 'til all pints are done -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be King's Rugby my son.
